Portage Chemical Dependency Treatment

Thistledew is a residential treatment facility with a range of programming services designed to address the needs of adolescent males that have experienced failure in the home, school and community and are frequently referred for services by the criminal justice and corrections systems.  A significant number of the youths referred have a history of substance abuse or dependency which is addressed through the Substance Abuse Intervention Program component of the Three-Month Residential Program. During the first three weeks at Thistledew, all Substance Abuse Intervention program participants are comprehensively evaluated to determine the resident’s current strengths and needs for change in the areas of physical, mental, chemical, and social health, and education.  A care plan based on that evaluation identifies the interventions that will be completed at Thistledew and a long-term plan for care and stability in the community.  Residents determined to be chemically abusive or dependent then complete a 6 week residential Substance Abuse Intervention program, followed by a 3-week Wilderness Endeavors experience.  Residents return to their home community for Substance Abuse Aftercare. In the community, Thistledew transition staff continue monitoring the care plan, meet with the resident, probation officer, Aftercare providers and family for twelve weeks to assure the plan meets the ongoing needs of the resident. All services meet the certification criteria under MN Statute 2960, the Umbrella Rule.

Nationally and locally, adolescents are increasingly involved in the production and use of illegal methamphetamine.  The Thistledew Substance Abuse Intervention Program is designed to provide the unique interventions necessary to treat this quickly addictive and permanently damaging drug.  Substance Abuse intervention is a cognitive behavioral program that is developmentally and individually based and includes long term Aftercare in the community.  All interventions are designed to reduce the risk of the youth choosing to return to methamphetamine use and the accompanying criminal lifestyle.

The CD program is staffed by licensed mental health and chemical dependency professionals with experience in a correctional setting. In addition to the Substance Abuse Intervention staff, Thistledew education and correctional staff provide services to meet education and other programming requirements.  All services are integrated into the positive and holistic Thistledew environment for change.
